Multiphase Flows for Process Industries: Fundamentals and Applications

Enabling process innovations via mastering multiphase flows: Gas–Solid processes

Abstract

A chapter in Multiphase Flows for Process Industries: Fundamentals and Applications (Wiley-VCH, 2022). The chapter provides a comprehensive treatment of gas–solid flows in process industries, covering fixed beds, dense fluidization, and dilute transport. Key industrially relevant equipment—fluid catalytic cracking risers, polymer reactors, cyclone separators, and rotary drums—are discussed with reference to flow physics, experimental characterisation, and CFD modelling approaches. The chapter demonstrates how mastery of multiphase flow fundamentals enables process innovations, from improved drag model development to scale-up of gas–solid reactors.
